Become a Fellow

Demonstrate your dedication and leadership in occupational medicine by becoming a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (FACOEM).


The FACOEM designation is ACOEM’s highest acknowledgment that recognizes years of dedication to exceptional education, leadership, and commitment to the specialty.

Class of 2027 Application Portal is Open!


To be eligible to apply to become an ACOEM Fellow (FACOEM), a physician member in good standing must:
 
  • Have been an Active Member in good standing for three membership years at the time of the application.
    • Note: Resident, Student and International Membership years do not count towards this requirement. One year of Resident Transition Membership does count towards the requirement.
  • Be Board Certified
    • SCENARIO 1: In occupational medicine through ABPM; or
    • SCENARIO 2: In another ABMS specialty, or international equivalent*, plus hold a master’s in public health (MPH) (or equivalent) plus 50 ACOEM CME credits; or
    • SCENARIO 3: In another ABMS specialty, or international equivalent*, plus 100 ACOEM CME credits (if no MPH)
*International applicants must provide proof of their equivalent certifications and training to a nationally-recognized board certification in a medical specialty.

All CME credits must be earned directly from ACOEM within the past five (5) years to meet the above requirements. ACOEM CME credits must be claimed so they appear on an applicant's ACOEM CME transcript. For Scenario 2, a maximum of 15 CME credits may be earned from an component society of ACOEM. For Scenario 3, a maximum of 30 CME credits may be earned from a component society of ACOEM.

Upon meeting these qualifications, physician members must:
Upload the required documents via the application portal.Please do not password protect any of the documents. If possible, please convert all documents to PDFs prior to submission.

  • Current Board Certification verification (or equivalent), with expiration date (such as copy of certificate or printout from website);
  • Current medical license, with expiration date;
  • Verification of MPH degree (or equivalent) (if following Scenario 2);
  • Current CV (professional experience in OEM must be reflected in your CV);
  • Narrative statement (1-2 pages) outlining contributions to the field of OEM, including dates, titles, positions or activity, and benefactors of contributions (volunteer roles, publications, teaching and lecturing, mentoring, public advocacy, committee service, etc.), as well as volunteer contributions to ACOEM (and/or special interest sections and component societies) outside of work duties.
    • Important note: Serving on ACOEM committees, councils, leadership for special interest sections or component societies, etc.), is STRONGLY encouraged. Being a member of ACOEM, a special interest section, or a component society does not qualify as a volunteer contribution. 
    • A narrative statement can be used to expand on any information provided in your application. If you choose to write a narrative statement in support of your application, the recommended format is a 1-2 page statement with the first paragraph detailing your volunteer contributions to ACOEM (or an ACOEM component society), the second paragraph detailing your volunteer contributions to the field of OEM (outside of your job responsibilities), and the third paragraph detailing your work experience in OEM.
  • Provide two letters of recommenation in support of your application for Fellowship (one must be from a current ACOEM Fellow). 
  • ACOEM CME Transcript (only if following Scenario 2 or 3).
  • Payment of the $225 non-refundable application fee.
