ACOEM Fellow Dr. Erica Schwartz Confirmed as CDC Director
The U.S. Senate voted on Aug. 5 to confirm ACOEM Fellow Dr. Erica Schwartz, FACOEM, as the 22nd director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A retired rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and former deputy surgeon general, Dr. Schwartz brings a unique combination of medical and legal expertise to the nation's leading public health agency.
"Having an ACOEM Fellow confirmed to lead the CDC highlights the critical role occupational and environmental medicine plays in the broader public health landscape," said ACOEM President Dr. Jill Rosenthal.

A new study published in NEJM Evidence discusses the increase in confirmed silicosis cases among engineered stone countertop fabrication workers in California.
ACOEM member Dr. David Michaels, professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University and former assistant secretary of labor for OSHA, co-authored the study and was featured in the Los Angeles Times' coverage of the findings.
ACOEM's component society, the Western Occupational and Environmental Medical Association (WOEMA), has been actively involved in advocacy and awareness efforts around the crisis.
