ACOEM Supports National Academy of Medicine’s Plan for Healthy Workforce Well-being

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) applauds the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) for its leadership in promulgating a National Plan for Health Workforce Well-being. Released this month, the Plan is intended to drive collective action to strengthen health workforce well-being and restore the health of the nation.

The publication of NAM’s 2019 report, Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A System’s Approach, spotlighted the crisis gripping the health workforce and detailed the evidence-based interventions demonstrated to help. But, three years later, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation has only worsened. No single player can make the complex changes necessary in every health workplace. The comprehensive, well-reasoned National Plan recognizes that only collaboration of the network of potent actors in the health ecosystem can ameliorate the problem.

As the pre-eminent physician-led organization that champions workers’ health and safety, ACOEM stands ready to collaborate with NAM and the many other organizations situaated to support the well-being of the health workforce. Hundreds of our members specialize in medical center occupational health and oversee programs to protect and promote the health of hundreds of thousands of health workers. They are well-positioned to play a critical role in implementing supportive interventions.
