A Message from ACOEM President, Stephen A. Frangos, MD, MPH, FACOEM

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine has been closely monitoring the rapidly changing COVID-19 epidemic. The health and safety of our members, and the populations they serve, is and will remain our highest priority. Recent developments, including increased corporate and federal travel restrictions and recommendations regarding limiting mass gatherings from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), have influenced ACOEM’s Board of Directors’ decision to cancel the 2020 American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC) and associated activities, which were scheduled between May 1-7, 2020, in Washington, DC.

The ACOEM Leadership acknowledges the immense amount of time and energy that our faculty, staff, exhibitors, sponsors, and partners put into planning and executing the annual AOHC. ACOEM is investigating options to deliver additional and enhanced educational content online in webinar or streaming format. ACOEM Board of Directors and House of Delegates meetings will be held remotely, and Council and Committee meetings will be rescheduled and held via teleconference. ACOEM Leadership will be working with Section and Component Leadership to offer assistance in scheduling online meetings.

We encourage adherence to the CDC guidance, recommendations, and strategies for prevention of the transmission of COVID-19 to help keep workplaces, homes, schools, and commercial establishments safe.

Please monitor ACOEM.org, ACOEM eNews, and our social media channels for continued updates. A list of CDC, WHO, EPA, and OSHA resources is available on the ACOEM COVID-19 page. Thank you for your patience and for your commitment to the health and safety of our local, national, and international communities.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will ACOEM refund registration fees for AOHC 2020?
Yes. ACOEM will issue penalty-free refunds for all conference registration-related fees, including registration and optional add-ons such as pre- and post-conference courses, guest tickets, and worksite visits. Please allow up to six weeks for refunds to be processed. Payments processed via credit card will be refunded automatically to your account. You will be notified electronically once refunds have been processed.  You do not need to call or email to request a refund.

What about my hotel reservation?
Please contact the Washington Hilton at 1-202-483-3000 about your reservation and visit the Hilton’s dedicated COVID-19 page at https://www.hilton.com/en/corporate/coronavirus/.

What about air travel?
Please check with your air carrier for flight cancelation policies. Currently, American, United, and Delta airlines are waiving flight change or cancelation fees for flights taking place in March or April. It is unclear if this policy will extend to flights for May.

Will ACOEM postpone or reschedule AOHC 2020?
No. Venues for an event the size of AOHC are typically booked 36-60 months in advance, and availability at the same venue at a later date is unlikely or impossible. Attendee, faculty, vendor, exhibitor, and other partner schedules would all need to coalesce.

Will there be other opportunities for CME education offered by ACOEM?
Absolutely. ACOEM staff and leadership are investigating several options to deliver the quality content from AOHC through other vehicles, including webinars / eLearning, smaller focused conferences, skills labs and courses at the OEM Learning Center, and more. Additionally, AOHC 2019 Encore offers up to 119 CME, and is available through December 31, 2020. The Occupational and Environmental Self-Assessment Tool is available at any time online and offers up to 35 CME.

What about the 2020 ACOEM Annual Business Meeting?
The 2020 ACOEM Annual Business Meeting has been canceled in accordance with parliamentary procedure.

I am an exhibitor / sponsor / partner at AOHC 2020. Will refunds be issued?
More information on refund processing and options will be posted on the ACOEM website and communicated to exhibitors/sponsors in the coming days. We appreciate your patience during this time.
